Resistance & the end of minority rule in South Africa

Narrated lesson · press play

How was apartheid, which seemed so powerful, finally brought down? We'll follow the many forms of resistance — from the ANC's peaceful defiance to the armed struggle, from Sharpeville to the Soweto uprising and Steve Biko. We'll ask who benefited from apartheid and why opposition grew, weigh the internal and external factors that made it collapse, and evaluate the roles of Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk in the transition to majority rule and the historic election of 1994.
