The apartheid state, 1948–1994

We now cross the border to South Africa itself, where apartheid was born. We'll see why the National Party won the fateful election of 1948, how it built the apartheid state law by cruel law — from the Population Registration Act to Bantu Education — and weigh the devastating impact on the majority. Then we'll look at how the state crushed opposition, from banning to the Sharpeville massacre, and ask how effective that repression really was.
