Climatic regions & natural vegetation

Narrated lesson · press play

The plants that grow wild in a place are decided almost entirely by its climate. In this lesson we travel across the three great tropical regions of the world — the hot, dripping equatorial rainforest, the wide savannah grasslands that cover most of Namibia, and the burning tropical deserts like our own Namib. For each one we look at its climate — temperature, rainfall, wind, cloud and humidity — and at the natural vegetation and the clever ways its plants survive. We learn to read a climate graph, and finally we face the threats of deforestation and desertification, and the ways — agro-forestry, reforestation and sustainable harvesting — that we can protect our living land.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Geography 1.7):

  • Identify and locate on a world map the vegetation regions: tropical rain/equatorial forest, tropical grassland (savannah) and tropical desert
  • Describe and explain the main features of the natural vegetation of each region
  • Describe and explain the main characteristics of the climate in each region under temperature, rainfall, wind, cloud cover and humidity
  • Analyse and interpret climate graphs showing the temperature and rainfall of each region
  • Discuss and analyse the causes and consequences of the rapid clearance of natural vegetation, such as desertification and deforestation
  • Discuss and analyse forest management techniques such as agro-forestry, reforestation and sustainable harvesting
