Industry & the Namibian fishing system
People make a living by turning the world's resources into useful things — and few resources are richer than the cold Atlantic off Namibia's coast. In this lesson we learn to see every industry as a system of inputs, processes and outputs, and to sort industries into primary, secondary and tertiary work. We then ask what decides where an industry is built, before diving into the sea to discover why the Benguela current and upwelling make Walvis Bay and Lüderitz one of the world's richest fishing grounds. We meet pelagic and demersal fish and how each is caught, see how a fish-processing plant works and clusters into an agglomeration, and learn how quotas and net rules keep the sea rich for the future.
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Geography 2.1):
- Classify industries into primary, secondary and tertiary activities
- Describe the factors influencing the location of industries: raw materials, labour, energy, capital, transport, markets and siting factors
- Describe the physical factors influencing the availability of the fish resource: ocean currents, upwelling, the marine food chain and the length of the coast
- Describe the exploitation of the fish resource with reference to demersal and pelagic fish and fishing methods
- Discuss the factors threatening fish stocks (red tides, fluctuating water temperatures, pollution, over-fishing) and management strategies for sustainable use (conservation legislation, quotas, net type and size)
- Describe the location factors, and the inputs, processes and outputs, of a fish-processing plant in Namibia, and the agglomeration effect
- Discuss the tertiary services needed by the fishing industry and its role in sustainable development
