A good experiment is planned before it's done and recorded so anyone can read it. Learn to work safely and accurately, sort variables into independent, dependent and control, write an aim and hypothesis, design a fair test, and set out results in tables and graphs the correct scientific way.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Chemistry 1.2):

  • Make observations accurately, use appropriate techniques, handle apparatus competently and safely
  • Distinguish between independent, dependent and control variables
  • State the aim and predict a hypothesis for an investigation
  • Explain how to make a test fair (reliable and accurate) using controls and the importance of a zero reading
  • Locate, select and organise information from a variety of sources
  • Record results in a logical manner (tables or graphs) and explain the importance of units
  • Head each table column with the physical quantity and unit (e.g. time / s) and use the headings to create graph axes
