This is how real scientists work. We learn to plan and carry out a fair investigation — making careful observations, handling apparatus safely, and telling apart the three kinds of variable (independent, dependent and control). Then we learn to record what we find in a clear results table, with the physical quantity and its unit in every column heading.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Physics 1.2.1–1.2.2):

  • Know the scientific way of planning and conducting an investigation
  • Make observations accurately, use appropriate techniques, handle apparatus competently and work safely
  • Distinguish between independent, dependent and control variables
  • State a hypothesis or aim in relation to the independent, dependent and control variables
  • Locate, select and organise information from a variety of sources
  • Record results in a logical way (tables or graphs) and explain why units matter
  • Head each table column with the physical quantity and its unit, e.g. time/s (unit in the heading, not in the readings)
