Welcome to electricity — and we start right at the beginning, with electric charge itself. You'll meet the two kinds of charge, learn how rubbing moves electrons to charge an object, discover the golden rule that like charges repel and unlike attract, draw electric field lines, tell conductors from insulators, charge things by induction, and understand discharge — from a tiny spark to a bolt of lightning — with its everyday uses and dangers.

What you'll learn in this lesson

  • Describe simple experiments to show the production of charge by friction and the detection of charge with an electroscope
  • State that there are positive and negative charges and that charge is measured in coulombs
  • State that like charges repel and unlike charges attract
  • Describe an electric field as a region in which a charge feels a force, and draw the field around a point charge and between two parallel plates
  • Distinguish between conductors and insulators using the simple electron model, with examples
  • Describe and explain charging by induction
  • Explain lightning as a discharge from a cloud, and state everyday uses and dangers of electrostatics
