Set language, notation & Venn diagrams

A set is just a tidy collection of things. In this lesson we learn the language mathematicians use to talk about sets — elements, the empty set, the universal set, complements and subsets — then we meet the union and the intersection, and we draw Venn diagrams for two and three sets. Finally we use those diagrams to solve real survey problems, filling in every region step by step.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Mathematics 2.1):
- Define sets by listing, by describing, and by using set-builder notation, e.g. A = {x : 1 ≤ x ≤ 5}
- Use and interpret the notation: is an element of, is not an element of, n(A), the empty set, the universal set and the complement A'
- Use and interpret subset notation: is a subset of, is a proper subset of, and is not a subset of
- Find and interpret the union and the intersection of two sets
- Draw and read Venn diagrams for two and three sets, and shade a given region
- Use sets and Venn diagrams to solve problems involving not more than three subsets of the universal set
