A matrix is just numbers arranged neatly in rows and columns — and it turns out to be one of the tidiest tools in mathematics. In this lesson we learn to read a matrix and state its order, then add and subtract matrices, multiply by a scalar, and tackle the big skill: multiplying two matrices row by column. We meet the identity and zero matrices, work out the determinant and inverse of a 2×2, and finish by using that inverse to solve two simultaneous equations at once.

  • Represent information as a matrix of any order and state the order (rows × columns) of a matrix
  • Add and subtract matrices of the same order, entry by entry
  • Multiply a matrix by a scalar
  • Multiply two matrices row-by-column, and decide when a matrix product is possible
  • Use the zero matrix and the identity matrix
  • Calculate the determinant of a 2×2 matrix
  • Find the inverse of a non-singular 2×2 matrix
  • Solve simultaneous linear equations by the matrix (inverse) method
