Fractions, decimals and percentages sound like three different things, but they are really one idea — a part of a whole — wearing three different outfits. In this lesson we take it slowly, from the very beginning: what a fraction means, equivalent fractions and simplifying, the four operations with fractions and mixed numbers, and how to switch freely between fractions, decimals and percentages. Then we put it to work with the money skills the exam loves — a percentage of an amount, percentage increase and decrease, and the clever reverse percentage.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Mathematics 1.2):
- Use the language and notation of vulgar (common) and decimal fractions and percentages
- Recognise equivalent fractions and simplify a fraction to its lowest terms
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers
- Convert between fractions, decimals and percentages, and use this to compare quantities
- Calculate a given percentage of a quantity, and express one quantity as a percentage of another
- Calculate a percentage increase and a percentage decrease
- Perform calculations involving reverse percentages (e.g. find the cost price given the selling price and percentage profit)
