Product & quotient rules

Narrated lesson · press play

In this lesson you will learn how to differentiate two functions multiplied together, and one function divided by another. You will meet the product rule and the quotient rule, and use a simple four-box table to apply each one without mistakes. You will also see how the chain rule can hide inside a product, and how to find the gradient of a curve at a point. By the end you will always know which rule to reach for.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCAS Mathematics (AS) 2.4.2):

  • Differentiate products of two functions using the product rule.
  • Differentiate quotients of two functions using the quotient rule.
