Dividing polynomials
Narrated lesson · press play
In this lesson you will learn to divide a polynomial by a linear or a quadratic divisor using long division, just like the long division of numbers you already know. You will divide the leading terms, multiply back, subtract, bring down, and repeat until you can stop. You will read off the quotient and the remainder, remember to write missing powers with a zero, and check your answer using dividend equals divisor times quotient plus remainder.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCAS Mathematics (AS) 2.1.3):
- Divide a polynomial of degree not exceeding 4 by a linear or a quadratic polynomial using the long-division algorithm, and identify the quotient and the remainder (which may be zero).
