Tsarist Russia, the 1905 Revolution & the impact of the First World War

In 1905 a mighty empire that had stood for three hundred years began to crack. We'll first see how Tsarist Russia was ruled — a huge, deeply unequal autocracy propped up by the army, the secret police, the Church and the bureaucracy. Then we'll watch the Tsar survive the 1905 Revolution through clever concession and hard repression, before the First World War knocks away every one of his supports and topples him in March 1917. We'll finish with the great exam question: was it long-term weakness, or the war, that really destroyed the Tsar?
