German colonialism, resistance & the genocide, 1884–1907

This is our own country's story, and one of the most painful in all of Namibian history. We will follow how Germany came to rule South West Africa after 1884, examine how colonial power took land, cattle and labour, meet the resistance leaders Hendrik Witbooi and Samuel Maharero, and study with dignity the war and genocide of 1904–07 — Waterberg, the Omaheke, the extermination order and the camps. We will end with the great AS questions: how far did the resistance matter, and how significant was the genocide in the long run, right up to Germany's recognition in 2021.
