Task 3 — note-taking under headings

Task 3 in Paper 1 gives you a short passage and a heading, and asks you to make brief notes of the points that fit under it — worth 8 marks. We'll learn the whole technique gently: read the heading first, hunt only for points that fit, write each one as a short phrase (not a full sentence), keep each point different, and count your notes against the marks. Then we'll model it together on a real Namibian passage about saving water.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO English Second Language 4.4):
- Explain what Task 3 requires: making brief notes under one or more given headings from a passage of about 400 to 500 words.
- Read the heading first and use it to decide exactly which points to look for.
- Scan a passage and select only the points that fit the heading, ignoring everything else.
- Write points as brief notes — short words or phrases — rather than full sentences or copied chunks.
- Match the number of notes to the marks available and avoid repeating the same point.
- Place each point under the correct heading and leave out personal opinions.
- Recognise that one mark is given for each correct, different point.
