What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCAS English Second Language (AS) 5.2.2):
- Learners should be able to explain why a paragraph must carry ONE main idea, and identify the topic sentence that announces it.
- Learners should be able to build a paragraph using the PEEL shape — Point, Evidence, Explain, Link.
- Learners should be able to develop an idea properly by explaining it and supporting it with concrete evidence, rather than stating a claim and moving on.
- Learners should be able to select connectives and discourse markers by the JOB they do — adding, contrasting, sequencing, giving cause, concluding.
- Learners should be able to distinguish between cohesion (the linking words that stitch sentences together) and coherence (the ideas making sense in order).
- Learners should be able to check a paragraph for unity and cut the sentence that wanders off the main idea.
- Learners should be able to explain how paragraphing earns marks under assessment objective W2 in Paper 1 Section B and in Paper 2.
