What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCAS English Second Language (AS) 5.1.2):
- Describe the exact format of Paper 1 Part 1: a text of about 700 words with five multiple-choice questions, each worth one mark.
- Name and recognise the six skills these questions test: detail, implication, tone, purpose, opinion/attitude and text-organisational features.
- Explain what reference words ('this', 'it', 'such', 'these') do and trace each one back to what it points to.
- Apply a calm four-move method: read the stem, locate the relevant text, test each option and eliminate the distractors.
- Recognise the three classic distractor traps and avoid them.
- Choose only answers that can be proved from the exact words of the text.
