What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCAS English Second Language (AS) 5.1.5):
- Learners should be able to explain what assessment objective R4 asks — analysing HOW language creates meaning, not just what a text says.
- Learners should be able to use the language toolkit: vocabulary and connotation, figurative language, sentence structure, sound features and rhetorical devices.
- Learners should be able to describe the overall STYLE of a text in terms of register, tone and purpose (formal/informal, emotive/objective, descriptive/factual).
- Learners should be able to apply the P-E-E method — Point, Evidence, Effect — to comment on a writer's use of language.
- Learners should be able to explain the effect of a chosen device on the reader, never simply naming it.
- Learners should be able to recognise and avoid 'feature-spotting' with no analysis.
