Government control & protecting consumers and workers

The government does not run most businesses, but it sets the rules of the game to keep people safe and treated fairly. In this lesson we learn why the government intervenes in business, and how it controls the production of goods and services through laws, licences, standards, taxes, bans and inspections. We see how consumers are protected in Namibia against false advertising, unsafe goods and short weights, and how workers are protected by the Labour Act — fair wages, safe conditions, no child labour and the right to join a trade union. Finally, we handle with care and respect an important syllabus point: how people living with HIV and AIDS are protected at the workplace.
