Designing the system: inputs, processing, outputs, storage & interface

Before anyone writes a single line of code, a new computer system must be designed — drawn up like an architect's blueprint. In this lesson we learn two big design goals (making a system portable and ready for the future), the four components every design must plan (input with validation, processing, output and storage), how to design a friendly interface, and why we always check the finished design against the original specification.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Computer Studies 1.2):

  • Design a portable system which is independent of particular computer systems
  • Design a system which allows future development to be made without major re-organisation of the system
  • Design the following components: data input – including data validation, data processing, data output, data storage
  • Design an effective interface – e.g. user-friendly input and output
  • Explain the importance of evaluating the system design against initial specifications
