Input devices & sensors: how they work and where they are used

Every time you tap a phone, swipe a card at a Shoprite till or a street light flicks on at dusk, an input device or a sensor has fed data into a computer. This lesson explains how the main input devices work, where they are used every day in Namibia, and how sensors give automated input by measuring the world around us.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Computer Studies 5.1):

  • Describe the principles of operation (how each device works) of these input devices: keyboards, mice, touch screens, interactive whiteboards, digital cameras, readers (barcode and QR), scanners (2D and 3D), microphones
  • Describe how the above functions are used in everyday situations, e.g. ATMs, scanning of passports at airports, POS systems, touch screens on mobile devices, interactive whiteboards in teaching and training, QR codes in magazines
  • Discuss the use of different types of sensors used for automated input, e.g. light/laser/infrared, temperature, magnetic field, gas, pressure, moisture, humidity, oxygen and pH, motion
  • Describe the purpose and use of the above sensors in everyday situations, e.g. street lights, security devices, greenhouses and other environmental monitoring, heating systems, gaming, household appliances, automatic doors, manufacturing and industrial applications
