Binary numbers: why binary, binary-denary conversion, bytes & registers

Every photo, song and message inside a computer is really just a long pattern of 1s and 0s. In this lesson Miss Maria shows you why computers count in binary, how to change binary into ordinary numbers and back again, and what a byte and a register really are. We work every conversion slowly on the board so you can copy the steps yourself.

  • Explain why binary numbers are used in computer systems
  • Convert binary to denary and vice versa using positive values up to 16 bits
  • Explain a byte and how the byte and its function in the measurement of memory
  • Explain what a register is and how binary is used for a variety of applications, e.g. storage, robotics, digital instruments, control systems and programming
