Mole calculations

Now put the mole to work. Calculate reacting masses from a balanced equation, use concentration and volume of solutions, find gas volumes with the 24 dm³ molar volume, work out empirical and molecular formulae, and calculate percentage composition, yield and purity.

What you'll learn in this lesson

  • Calculate stoichiometric reacting masses of pure substances
  • Carry out calculations involving concentrations and volumes of solutions (g/dm³ or mol/dm³; limiting reactants may be set)
  • Use the molar gas volume, taken as 24 dm³ at rtp, in calculations of reacting masses and gas volumes
  • Calculate empirical formulae using composition-by-mass data
  • Use empirical formulae and Mr to calculate molecular formulae
  • Calculate percentage composition, percentage yield and percentage purity
