Carboxylic acids
Narrated lesson · press play
The sour taste of vinegar comes from a carboxylic acid. Learn the carboxyl functional group that defines this family, and how ethanoic acid is made by oxidising ethanol — either slowly by bacteria, or quickly with acidified potassium manganate(VII).
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Chemistry 10.6):
- Describe carboxylic acids as compounds with the carboxyl functional group (COOH)
- Describe the formation of ethanoic acid by the oxidation of ethanol — by fermentation (bacteria) or with acidified potassium manganate(VII)
