Meet two more organic families. You'll recognise the –COO– ester linkage and the –NH₂ amine group in condensed, displayed and skeletal formulae, name esters from their parent alcohol and acid (like methyl ethanoate) and name primary amines (like 2-aminobutane). You'll deduce molecular formulae from a structure, work through both acid and base hydrolysis of esters and DRAW the products, and explain why esters make such good solvents, perfumes and flavourings.

  • Interpret and use general, structural (condensed and displayed) and skeletal formulae of primary amines (the –NH₂ group) and esters (the –COO– ester linkage)
  • Name esters from the parent alcohol and carboxylic acid, and name primary amines, up to six carbons (e.g. methyl ethanoate, 2-aminobutane)
  • Deduce the molecular formulae of esters and primary amines from a given structure
  • Describe the acid and base (alkaline) hydrolysis of esters and draw the structures of the products
  • Explain why esters are used as solvents, perfumes and flavourings
