In this lesson we meet sustainable agriculture, the research that keeps improving our crops and herds, the value of educating farmers, the clever ways we add value to farm products, and how the Ministry of Agriculture lifts up rural communities.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Agricultural Science 1.2):
- Define sustainable agriculture (maximising the benefits of natural resources for the present generation without limiting future generations to do the same)
- Define agricultural research
- Discuss examples of agricultural research activities that lead to the improved production of agricultural commodities in Namibia (research on improved crop varieties, animal feeding, animal health, genetic improvement)
- Describe the value of education in agriculture and how this contributes to the improvement of food and cash crop production
- Discuss ways of adding value to agricultural products for sustainability: preservation, processing, culturing, cooking, freezing, cooling, canning, drying
- Discuss how agriculture can bring about the much-needed development and better living conditions for rural people in Namibia
- Explain how the government/Ministry of Agriculture can help in the development of rural communities
