Beef breeds, characteristics, handling & their role

On a Namibian cattle farm you will see red cattle, humped cattle, big-eared cattle and white-faced cattle — all standing in the same fierce sun. In this lesson we meet the main beef breeds farmed in Namibia one at a time, learn which ones the Ministry of Agriculture recommends and why, describe what makes a good beef animal, work through the handling jobs a farmer must do and the tools used, and see how beef farming feeds our whole economy through meat and hides.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Agricultural Science 4.2.1–4.2.4):
- Identify the most important breeds of beef cattle, such as Afrikaner, Brahman, Bonsmara, Sanga and Hereford
- List the cattle breeds recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture for farming purposes in Namibia and discuss reasons for the recommended breeds
- Describe the general characteristics of beef cattle
- Explain the reasons for carrying out different handling practices in beef cattle farming and how to carry them out, and the tools used
- Explain the contribution of beef cattle farming to the economy of the country and the importance of beef products such as meat and hides (leather)
